Intent leads explained: how to spot buyers who are ready to close.

Every lead on a list looks the same. Intent is what tells you which account buys this quarter — and which one ghosts your SDR after the first message.

Every lead on a list looks the same. Same job title, same company size, same industry tag. None of that tells you which company is actually going to buy something this quarter — and which one is going to ghost your SDR after the first message.

The difference between the two is intent. For firms selling $25,000 legal retainers, $100,000 commercial insurance policies, $50,000 consulting engagements, or capital introductions to PE funds, knowing which prospects are actively shopping is the single biggest determinant of pipeline efficiency.

This guide explains what intent data actually is, which signals predict a real buyer, why most firms get it wrong, and what high-ticket B2B businesses should do with it in 2026.

What “intent” actually means

Intent data is behavioral evidence that a specific company — or a specific person inside it — is actively researching a problem, category, or vendor in your space. It moves beyond firmographic guessing and tells you what someone is doing right now. A useful framing: intent data is “a probability signal, not proof of purchase intent”, per Percepture. Nobody announces they are about to buy. But behavior reveals it.

There are three types, each from a different source:

  • First-party intent — your own properties: pricing-page visits, demo requests, repeat downloads, email engagement. Highest signal quality, but limited to people who already found you.
  • Second-party intent — review platforms and trusted partners (G2, Capterra, TrustRadius) where prospects are actively comparing vendors. Strong signal because the buyer is in active evaluation.
  • Third-party intent — the wider web: topic surge data, content consumption on industry publishers, competitor site visits. Catches buyers before they have heard of you, but accuracy varies.

The strongest programs run all three. The weakest run a single signal type and treat it as gospel. The market reflects the stakes: intent data is worth an estimated $4.5 billion in 2026, growing at a 15.9% CAGR, per MarketBetter. Most of that spend, however, is not producing pipeline — we will come back to why.

The signals that actually predict a buyer

Not every digital footprint is a buying signal. The ones that consistently translate into pipeline for high-ticket service firms:

Isolated signals lie. Combined signals don’t. A single trigger is noise; three stacking on one account is a meeting waiting to be booked.

— The rule that separates intent from dashboards.

Why intent data matters more in high-ticket B2B

70% of the B2B buying journey now happens anonymously, before any vendor is contacted, per 6sense. By the time a buyer fills out your form, they have evaluated competitors — and 92% already have at least one vendor in mind, with 41% having selected a preferred vendor before formal evaluation begins, per Forrester via Salesmotion. A further Forrester finding: 85% of B2B buyers ultimately purchase from a vendor already on their consideration list before evaluation started.

For finance, law, insurance, and consulting, the implication is sharp: if a buyer has not been hearing from you before they are officially in the market, you are not on the shortlist — you are the consolation interview. Gartner’s structural finding sits next to that: B2B buyers spend only 17% of their purchase journey meeting with potential suppliers. The other 83% happens without you in the room. Intent data is the mechanism for getting in front of buyers earlier — while the committee is forming an opinion, not after.

The numbers on what intent data actually does

But the line that matters more than any of those: 91% of B2B marketers use intent data, yet only 24% report exceptional ROI, per DemandScience. The gap is not the data. It is what teams do with it.

Why most intent data programs fail

  1. Buying data without an activation plan. Signal alone does not book meetings. Exponential growth in the data market has not produced exponential revenue growth for most users — the difference is execution, not raw signal.
  2. Acting on single signals. One homepage visit is not in-market. Three pricing visits + a case-study download + a G2 comparison visit — that is a signal. Layer beats single.
  3. Slow response to surge windows. Mid-market buying windows can compress to 2–4 weeks. A 14-day data delay plus a 5-day SDR delay means the prospect has already taken three vendor calls.
  4. Treating intent as a lead source, not a prioritization tool. Intent is a ranking system applied to your existing ICP, not a list. Acting on every flagged account wastes capacity on topic-matches that are not buyer-profile matches.
  5. Ignoring the dark funnel. Buyers complete 60–90% of decision-making before contacting vendors, reviewing ~11 pieces of content first. Outbound-only programs miss the entire research window.

What high-ticket firms should actually do

Combine intent with ICP

A signal from a bad-fit account is still a bad-fit account. Build a composite score requiring both fit (does this match your ICP?) and intent (are they showing buying behavior?). Only act on accounts that pass both. It saves 50%+ of SDR time and multiplies meeting quality.

Track the right signals for your category

  • Finance: funding events, M&A, CFO/CRO/Head of Compliance changes, SEC filings, regulatory triggers.
  • Legal: lateral partner moves, new matters in your practice area, regulatory shifts, IPO or M&A activity at target clients.
  • Insurance: risk/finance leadership changes, M&A (forcing policy review), expansion events, regulatory deadlines.
  • Consulting: funding rounds, leadership changes, restructuring, priorities surfaced in earnings calls.

Most platforms — Bombora, 6sense, Demandbase, ZoomInfo, Cognism — cover the bulk of these. Pick by which signal categories matter in your vertical, not which has the loudest brand. EU and UK firms should check GDPR posture first: Cognism is one of the only providers purpose-built for European data compliance.

Build for fast activation, not better dashboards

The teams that win turn signals into specific SDR actions within 24–48 hours — a specific message, a specific contact, a specific channel. If you cannot move from “this account is in-market” to “this exact person got a relevant message” inside 48 hours, you are not running an intent program. You are running a dashboard subscription.

The bottom line

Intent data is not a magic source of new leads. It is a prioritization layer that tells you which accounts in your existing universe are ready to talk right now. For firms in finance, law, insurance, and consulting: stop treating every account as equal-weight, stop guessing at timing, and stop chasing prospects who are not in the market. The buyers who are leave signals every day. Reading them is the difference between a 1% reply rate and a 6% one.
